I was surfing the net today and saw a video of an actual shark attack on a young woman. It was scary and exciting.
I had just watched a video of a barracuda that had jumped 8-10 feet in the air and landed live on a fishing boat. These things are dangerous. It made me realize that my not particularly caring for the sea is not such a wild idea. The sea is dangerous.
I don’t care much for water at all. If I go to a beach, I really just want a book on CD or my Kindle and I am fine. But, the whole point is that the two videos reminded me of a movie I watched not long ago.
It was entitled “Soul Surfer”. Now, I am not sure if you have heard of it or if you have watched it. However, for a guy who has so much trouble with water, I was spellbound by this movie.
It is a TRUE story of a young woman, Bethany Hamilton, who lives, I believe, in Hawaii. She is a champion surfer, who loses her arm in a shark attack, but refuses to give up. Her faith in God is nearly immeasurable and I found tears gathering as I watched (in fact, just a little even now as I remember it). It is a movie well worth your time. Below is the trailer.
Did I mention great sound track and excellent actors/actresses?!

you know what, the ocean scares me too for the reasons you mentioned but also the great danger of jellyfish one of which is so tiny you might not know you’ve been stung…but it is also the most deadly and if stung, you don’t have much of a chance..but even the thought of the ones that aren’t deadly are enough to keep me out of the ocean! i so want to see that movie…i have heard so much good about it!

Hi,
I remember when she lost her arm in the shark attack, just unbelievable, it was of course front page news here as we have a few shark attacks here in Oz every summer especially on our surf board riders. Then to see her again in the news heading back out to sea with her board and one arm was just amazing, and she learnt how to surf again.
I have never watched the movie, but I did follow her story in the news at the time.

My mom’s friend was surfing in Pacific Grove, CA with his friend and they saw a shark as long as 4 vans. The next time his friend went out he was killed by that shark. They found his surfboard with a huge chunck out of it. The sea can be dangerous, but so can driving, even crossing the street. I am so happy I went surfing and was so healed by swimming in the ocean. The longer I live, the more I think I would like to die doing something I love rather than fearing how I might die one day. Thanks for this thought-provoking post. Sam 🙂

I don’t so much worry about dying or even how. I simply am enjoying life enough to want to stay in it!
