Friday Fictioneers –
Uncle Waldo
Sally packed most of the things pulled from the house. Waldo, her uncle on her mother’s side, had passed on at 81 three days ago from a heart attack. He had been the love and laugh of her life. Always the jokester; he had lived frugally. She kept the Hanukkah menorah, the old dial phone, and a photograph of her beloved uncle. The picture was for tomorrow’s service. She didn’t feel right. She looked hard, then picked up a bright red crayon and drew a beard and mustache on her uncle.
“There,” she thought as she smiled, “Now it’s right.”

Hi Scott,
Very innovative of you to work all those disparate items into your well-organized story of family loss. Ron

Awesome! An act only someone who knew a person well could get away with! Oddly enough, I understood the emotion in this. We all carry an image of those we love in our head.

yes! the last two lines perfect for this piece. just one nit, and it may be just me, but the word “hard” seems a bit harsh for the sentence. Great story.

Sometimes it’s more important to see how the loved ones were in life. Nice, touching, and powerful.

Dear Scott,
Years ago when a friend of mine, a comedian that some might remember, passed away. His memorial service was like Saturday night at the improv and at his funeral his children handed out milk caps with his picture and peanut M&M’s. Very fitting, if you knew Dennis.
Loved your story.

It’s GREAT, Scott! I loved reading this and seeing the humor there. Excellent use of the prompt! In fact, this is something Rochelle would appreciate (and would cook up, too — she knows it!!!). Wonderful read!

I really liked that. And Waldo is a perfect name for a beloved uncle.

Very nice and touching. Sometimes the outrageous act can make sense in a sad situation like nothing else can. Not too many Jewish guys named Waldo though!.

The jokester shouldn’t have a serious picture. People need to remember him as he really was. I agree with Sally’s decision. Farewell tributes are a special time. Nice that you created one both fitting and memorable.

I don’t really want a horribly sad funeral when I go. I am living life and I want others to see that and enjoy it. A celebration of life would be a better farewell to me.
