There’s a Song in the Air (and in my Head)

Yeah, kinda like that!

I once read a short story about a man who created the perfect melody.  It was so wonderful that, once he heard it, he became comatose and could no longer hear or do anything else forever.

Now, that may be fiction, but there are melodies that haunt your mind.  For me, it seems to depend on what’s going on at the time, because a song that simply gets in my head and won’t leave for days, just doesn’t necessarily do it a few weeks later.

Do you know what I am talking about?  It’s that song or part of a song that, once you hear it, it is in your mind and thoughts constantly, to one degree or another.  I have had songs that simply remained in my memory and I would find myself humming them at many points over the next few days.  Then there were songs that absolutely took over my brain and I heard the melody or good part of it nearly every waking second from hours to days.

This can be very upsetting.  It is pleasant for a time, but then becomes a nightmare.  Think of the pleasant feeling you might have of hunger just before your favorite meal is being served.  Now, think of how it would be to have that feeling constantly for days!  I am talking about something way beyond conscious choice.  The same melody which was so beautiful when first played can become a monotonous pain in  your head until it finally leaves.

The scary part after is the worry I go through after it leaves when I wonder what will happen if I ever hear it again.  Most of the time, if I wait a day or so, there is no problem.  However, about the time I count on that, it will strike again.  Perhaps, not so badly this time, but still…

Regardless, here are the last two melodies that got “stuck” in my brain.  The first one is the wedding song from “Twilight”.  It was the most recent and was not horrible; I simply kept hearing it for about 1-2 days.

It will make my daughter very happy to know how much I liked that song as it was from “Twilight”.  I was okay with the movies (I am okay with most movies), but “glowing” vampires just doesn’t cut it.

The second song here was the best worst as it haunted me for days and, basically, took over my thoughts.  I tried to shake it out, but, in the end, only a day or two of forgetful sleep managed to dislodge it from my brain.  It is another Christina Perri song, “arms.”

Now, I need to tell you that I enjoy a lot of different types of music.  However, this song is, I think by far, my favorite song.  I also think that Christina Perri has a gorgeous voice.  But, the song has, fortunately, not affected me quite the same as it did a few weeks ago.

Oh, and one final note:  I hope you all find it very funny that, since I started writing this post – last night “A Thousand Years” was stuck in my head most of the night.  It was replaced early morning by “Jar of Hearts” and since I have been up, “Arms” has been running though almost without stopping.  🙂
