Atten-shun
By Scott L Vannatter
____
Alice stood stoically and sadly at attention.
She had been trained since childhood to be a guard.
It is what she wanted and what her father and his father had wanted.
_
Lately, however, she had realized how lonely it was to be on post.
The Palace was wonderful and every guard’s dream, but there was just her.
She could not even say anything to her replacements when they came on duty.
_
A young man walked past her. As he did so, he stopped, and quickly, lightly kissed her cheek.
He did not see the barest of smiles on her face.

Say that’s sweet, and she didn’t even use her bayonet, she must be in love 🙂

That takes guts to kiss a guard on duty, especially one with a rifle in that position. Must be true love. 🙂

Yeah, I think that’s fair comment!

I think I’ve been that girl a time or two. Always on guard. Ever hopeful for that one kiss.
Good story Scott.

I imagine you always received that kiss, too!

In most cases no, I didn’t.

Very sweet. I loved the image of the man kissing her cheek. Well done. .

Oh, this is great! I loved this. Oh, what a lonely post indeed. She is dedicated to her job.

Yes, but her mind may be a bit off it for the rest of the shift.

Ooh, I hope Alice can find more of that when she’s off-duty. Certainly, she’s on a pedestal already. Maybe this guy likes seeing her there.

Now, that’s a thought!

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to jump up and down and squeal like a monkey in front of these guards to see if you could break their stare. I suppose if they did, they’d have to shoot you. Enjoyed the story, Scott. A gentle touch.

The mental image of you jumping up and down makes me laugh, Russell. I’ll toss you a banana.

I like the idea and the story as told but … For this to work Alice would have to be really short and/or the young man passing by really tall. Look at that plinth she’s standing on and the way the ground slopes away. 🙂

So, apparently, Alice is very short and the guy (it has been suggested he is the Prince) is very tall.
I have no problems with that. 🙂 And, as we all know, the picture is just a prompt. Thank you for noticing and commenting. I will try to pay a bit more attention in the future.
