Shoes of the Past
Scott L Vannatter – 100 Words
Carolyn walked through the dark room guided by sunbeams filtering through dirty skylights. The jagged splotches of illumination somewhat resembled a checkerboard from hell. She stopped, noticing a small wooden platform near several large panoramas of early American history. The platform shone a bit more than the rest of the area and on top sat a pair of empty clod hoppers, farmer’s boots. They almost seemed in place here in the museum with this exhibit – almost.
Carolyn crept over to the pair and examined them. Nestled down inside each boot were the remains of a foot. She drew the berretta.

Thanks for reading another vignette from Carolyn’s story. I have begun the longer version of the story and began by posting part one last night on my blog. I hope to see you there. As a side note – you have no idea how close I came to calling this “Soles of the Past” 🙂

I like Soles of the Past. It has a nice ring. You had me going there. I expected her to find dirty socks.

That would have made the story soiled and dirty.

It’s a long time since I’ve heard the word ‘clodhopper’ used!
Scary stuff for my first week on FF.

Interesting, we’ve intermittently had sneakers and feet washing up on Vancouver, BC beaches for the past few years. No real cues, and no bodies with missing feet. Very intriguing. Your story makes me wonder all of the same things.

Oh when finding boots outdoors I almost always expect to find the remains of a foot.. or a black plastic sack floating in the water… and still it happens..

Dear Scott,
My dad used to say that a pun is the lowest form of pastry.
Eew, nothing worse than finding foot remains in boots. That would spoil my day at the museum. Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Lol – Can’t for the longer version – doesn’t fit, but good to know that my blogger friends appreciate, as my High School English teacher put it, “Puns, the lowest form of humor.” Of course, my question is, if it is the lowest form, why did Shakespeare use it so much? 🙂
