Five Sentence Fiction – Vacation

Once again, Lillie McFerrin brings us Five Sentence Fiction (click to check it out).  After reading my entry below, please click > HERE < to read the other creations.  Enjoy!!!

When I arrived, the police were already checking the vacation scene out, what little there was to check out.

Truth was the scene was pretty plain (weird, but plain):  there was a large, green book with a long, thin, cloth, black bookmark in it; there was a pair of dark sunglasses, not cheap, not expensive laying on top of the book; there was a rumpled, dry beach towel on the ground beside the other stuff; and there were a few drops of red (blood?) liquid marking parts of a line from the towel to the ocean.

After asking the officers’ permission, I picked up the green book belonging to my aunt Gilda and read the title of the marked page:  midway through the story “Sirens of the Undead” by Scott L Vannatter in the Kevin Bufton anthology of horror “The Dead Sea“.

I read the story, thought about it for a bit, then looked at the scene again thinking, “I wonder…”.

I looked out over the ocean and could swear I saw a tail fin and a shock of blond hair rise up and then go under the water.

Mystery is thickening. Brilliant use of the link of your book.

Why would the police check a “vacation” scene out, I’d expected a murder scene some sort instead. I also like the way you’ve snuck in a little self-promotion there as well. I like the mystery which is present – a mystery of the missing blond and the sighted fin of a shark – – is there a connection ??? ! ! !

I basically just wanted to use the word “vacation”. Obviously, it is a murder scene as someone saw the things there and the “blood” and called.
As for the connection, you would have to read my self-promoted story to understand that fully! 🙂
