Whodunnit
by Scott L Vannatter – 100 words
Melanie looked around the lavish room, spotted the candle wax burning low, the previous hours spilling down the table. Her mind analyzed as she put the entire image to memory. Two drops of blood near the table, staining the white shag; heavy fireplace poker missing along with the sectional rug (noticed because the shag had two shades); Jenny nowhere around.
“Yes, Magistrate, she was murdered here and I believe I know who the killer is.”
“Ma’am?”
“It was Paul in the parlor with the poker.”
“Paul?”
“Yes, Magistrate, the butler did it. I believe he thinks this is a game!”

Dear Scott,
Personally, I think it was Colonel Mustard all along. 😉 Clever story.

OH! This is lovely. What a great winding and weaving of words, and a perfect reminder of an old game that was fun to play. Kudos!

Interesting story. It took me two reads to get to ‘ the previous hours spilling down the table’ . Wonderful interpretation of wax.

Scott, That mystery was solved fast. I think Melanie outdid Sherlock Holmes. XD The police will most likely have to start a manhunt for that butler. Let’s hope he’s not a master of disguise. Well-written and humorous. XD

The three “P’s” made me smile. And I LOVE the word picture of the hours (as wax, representing time) spilling down the table. Excellent use of metaphor!

Well, thank you. It’s great that you liked the metaphor on time/wax. I received another comment that swung the other way. I guess it depends on the reader. I should have known that, anyway.

Yes, I saw that as well. Just as Rochelle reminds us that it’s not the picture but what we see, I think folks are the same with words. We all read through our grid, and everyone really is different! That’s a good thing, I think. 🙂

Yes, it is. Thanks for pointing it out.

Ah.. Yes always the butler.. Great alliteration in Paul in the parlor with the poker… (I wonder that’s why the victim had a poker face.)

It’s a “Clue!!” Good one, Scott. My only quibble is here “the:previous hours spilling down the table.” The hours aren’t spilling on the table. Maybe “the previous hours’ spilling on the table”, which would say the previous hours’ wax spilled. 🙂

Supposed to be a metaphor linking wax to hours. guess that didn’t work.
