Five Sentence Fiction – Wheels
“A Body in Motion”
By Scott L Vannatter September 22, 2014
“Load the cannon, shoot the cannon; load the cannon, shoot the cannon!” thought private Clearmont as he filled the monstrosity with both powder and a 16 pound iron ball.
It was bad enough that the other two soldiers helping him had run off, but this was his first time at really firing one of the things.
He had pointed the contraption in the general direction and allowed for distance to the enemy’s front line.
He stood behind the cannon and lit the fuse, too late remembering that there needed to be blocks behind the wheels when firing this far.
As the cannon shot backwards with the blast and he felt his body lifting through the air, all he could think of was that he was a private and they could not bust him down any farther.
