Modest Earth Goddess

By Scott L Vannatter – 159 Words

Herbert looked at the floral representation of the Earth goddess. She was beautiful, full, and, well, boring. The Eastern seaboard floral exhibit cabinet was coming tomorrow specifically to see this presentation and Herbert thought it needed something. His dirt-caked fingers lifted his hat and scratched his balding head. He smiled. He knew just what to do. They all said the Earth goddess was goddess of the Harvest, full-figured and sensual. He would show them that side of her.

Herbert took his shovel and decided that he would need to be careful to keep the roundness of both breasts if he was going to dig out the front of the display. Down about three feet should do it. He raised the tool in the air and his face hit the dirt. Something had flipped him in the back of the head! He looked at the female plant figure. He thought she had been smiling before. He decided to go home early.

Arch(ed) Eyebrows

By Scott L Vannatter – 100 words

Morton Hammerall, in classic form, walked to the dais near the center of the arch and faced into the courtyard.

He began by giving his prepared speech. First, was the acceptance and the humility of that acceptance. Next, came the reasons for his being chosen in the first place.

Third, was his recognition of all those who had helped him reach this pinnacle of his spiritual and leadership existence.

He spoke loudly and strongly with great devotion and humbled thankfulness. He raised his arms for the applause.

It was then he fully realized that he was facing the wrong way.

Owing the Man Upstairs

By Scott L Vannatter – 158 Words

Marcelle, postman extraordinaire, had volunteered for this route. He loved the long drive out into the middle of the desert before beginning the delivery of mail to people who, often, never dealt much with another person. Steve Medlin was one such individual. His mail box was so unique and so, well, different, that Marcelle always enjoyed reading all the wording and placing the letters in the various slots. This was the first time he had gotten to use the “alien” slot. There was no cable out here, no Internet, no phone lines for that matter. Little or no reception for miles made this location only a place for those who were hermits down deep. They might be open-spaced hermits, but hermits, nonetheless.

Apparently, Steve was a bit of a loon. Or, at least, Marcelle and others had thought so. Now, here was a post, labeled “overdue” and the address was, literally, “out of this world”. Who woulda thunk?

Comeuppance

By Scott L Vannatter – 151 words

They waved proudly and strongly to the crowd. Society loved them and they reveled in it.

Politics was swinging back their direction and they really felt they could help in spite of how they had grown up and some of the more distasteful things they had done. Perhaps, the world was forgetting and moving on at last.

He walked slowly up the back fire stairs to the top of the apartment building. The bag was heavy, dragging on him with each step. When he reached the top, he dropped the leather sack on the roof, took out the .308, adjusted the scope.

Taking position facing the pair, he sighted the man’s heart.   He could almost see it beating. 450 yards was quite a distance, but he could manage the shot with this light breeze, the sun at his back. He took aim; he had not forgotten; they would pay their dues.

Crisis of 1885

SVBookman 160 Words

Janet smoothed her daughter’s long hair and whispered “Shoosh, my little lady. All will be fine.” The young girl’s head and body was racked with emotion. Janet had not even been able to get her daughter to speak of what had happened. She knew it dealt with the Johnson boy, the rascal. The mother breathed short, shallow, and fast to keep from tensing and adding to her daughter’s troubles.

Finally, she spoke. She looked up at the older woman’s sweet face and said with all embarrassment and with hushed tones, “He, he wanted me to to…”

“Yes,” continued mother with some urgency.

“He wanted me to … kiss his his…” again the pause. Janet was dreaming up ways to kill the boy without anyone finding out.

“…Kiss his … hand! Oh, mother, how could he ask me to do that so soon?” The tears started freely again.

Janet tried to let the air out slowly. Oh, to be young again.
