The Last Straw

He picked up the items and tried to manage a smile, but could not.

I mean, really, he wondered if they had been worth the price:  he had actually lost pieces of himself in this mess.

Then, she found him and, with some reluctance, he handed the precious relics to her.

She smiled, holding them at arm’s length to get a good view and so he could see her smile beaming at him.

“Just remember,” he said, brushing the loose straw from his outfit, “you need to click the heels and say ‘there’s no place like home’ three times for them to work.”

Off from Poppyland

By Scott L Vannatter

The motley crew, one by one, began to drop to their knees, each succumbing to the scented nectar of the poppies all around them.

The Tin man first, his clanking heard round the empire, followed by the lion who, for his entire cowardliness, managed to fall asleep in front of everyone.

The scarecrow nested among his own limbs of straw softness; Dorothy lying in his arms.

Lastly, the skinny little runt of a dog managed to nose off the crimson slippers and step into them with a “tap” “tap” “tap”.

“Heading back, homies,” he growled, fading into the afternoon sun.

Dale walked around the torn-up yard and the nearly collapsed barn.  He looked everywhere.  June, finally, stopped him.

“What are you doing?”  She said.

“Looking.”

“I can see that.  What are you looking for?”

“Well, the house is gone.  I was looking for the owners.”

“Gone.  I told you all this.  It’s a great buy and we won’t have to tear everything down.”

“Yeah, you told me.  You said a girl and her aunt, three uncles, and a dog, right?”

“That’s right.  The tornado took the house.”

“Well, it could be worse.”

“How so?”

“At least, we’re not in Kansas.”
