Friday Fictioneers – Romantic Fiction – PG13

Atten-shun

By Scott L Vannatter

____

Alice stood stoically and sadly at attention.

She had been trained since childhood to be a guard.

It is what she wanted and what her father and his father had wanted.

_

Lately, however, she had realized how lonely it was to be on post.

The Palace was wonderful and every guard’s dream, but there was just her.

She could not even say anything to her replacements when they came on duty.

_

A young man walked past her.  As he did so, he stopped, and quickly, lightly kissed her cheek.

He did not see the barest of smiles on her face.

Piano Man Extraordinaire

.

Heckles walked out on the small stage, honked his nose, flapped his huge feet, and squirted water on the first two rows of onlookers with his flower lapel pin.  He strutted over to the large upright and graciously plopped his rear on the seat.  Cracking his knuckles, he brought his hands down hard on the keys.

During practice, the piano would bellow out high bells and whistles.  Today, his hands sank down into the board followed, slowly, by the rest of him.  To thunderous rounds of applause, his final thought was, “At last, I have finally put myself  into my music.”

Friday Fictioneers – 5/31/2013 – “Dressing Down” – Rated PG13

“Dressing Down”

Mathilda Hoppenstance pulled a stunt that no one had ever done nor will do  (probably).  And, she owes it all to her OCD, depression, and occupation.

Mathilda was having a bad day or year.  She couldn’t hold a job or a guy.  She put up with it, then decided to say aloha to this old world.

She jumped from the roof.  Clean and simple.  But, realizing what the stop would do to her new dress, Mathilda, being a quick-change artist, managed to take the dress off and hang it on a third-story railing before leaving us all.  What a gal!

History in the Making

“Do you think it will last?”

“What?  The fireworks?”

“No, I was thinking about the country.”

She stepped closer to him while waiting for his reply.

“You shouldn’t worry about it so much.  We pray and God is with us.”

“Will He always be?”

“You shouldn’t even think like that,” he scolded, his voice rough and his eyes darting around.

She looked at the child wrapped up in the quilt.

“I am … sorry.  I worry for Alexander.”

“I know, but stop worrying.  We will always be strong and safe.  After all, it’s 1776 and we have come so far.”

Namaste,

Scott
