Five Sentence Fiction – Festival

The Fabulous Lillie McFerrin runs this!

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week I will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.

This week:  FESTIVAL

“A Thing to Celebrate”

Josie’s eyes were bigger this year than others, since she was at the yearly town festival without her parents because she had turned 15 in March, and because she had swept her classes with all As both semesters.

She noticed everything all around her; there was the Merry-go-round, the Tilt-a-whirl, all the sideshows and things to do, as well as the tents and the concession building which was run by the Shriners.

Her eyes were also big because her hand was settled in the hand of a Junior, Doug Malvets, who played basketball and ran track as well as played in the band; he had asked her to meet him and she was all tipsy inside as they climbed aboard the Ferris Wheel.

The circular ride carried them round and round, high enough to see the entire town from the top; when it stopped, so did her heart.

Doug looked at Josie, then closed his eyes as he leaned toward her for a kiss, her first; it was a moment she would never forget up to the day she passed away from Cancer after two children and thirty-eight wonderful years of marriage to Doug.
