Maps

“Reality is Mirrored”

By Scott L Vannatter

Tolan stared at the newest work of H. N. Salimond:  it was a full world map complete with scale readings, country names, and all the other necessities needed to be used everywhere in the world, especially the digital world.

“Master Salimond, if I may be so bold,” Tolan began timidly, “you have created a wonderfully detailed rendition of the entire surface of our planet, but…”  he trailed off.

“Yes, man!  Out with it!  I haven’t got all day!”  Salimond kept inking and rendering different section of the maps, small corrections and enhancements everywhere.

“Sir, if you publish this on the Internet, the entire world will be using a map whose scale is wrong in that Europe is much smaller and Africa is so much bigger in reality.”

“Reality, my boy, is what we make it on the Internet in that, given time, everyone will simply accept this map as the truth over reality!”

I have the article listed/linked below; this particular story is based on truth.  It seems that the maps (most of them, anyway) that were used in our textbooks had the countries incorrectly sized.  – Scott

Five Sentence Fiction – Luminous – “Bioluminescence” Rated PG13

Lillie gives us Five Sentence Fiction.  Read mine below, the rest > HERE < Enjoy!!!

Luminous

“Bioluminescence”

By Scott L Vannatter

Corey had said it was not just a fluke; it was important and it was going to have serious consequences.

Corey had been right; he had not wanted to be; it just was.

A freak mixing of some type of airborne/waterborne chemical leftover with living tissue was the cause and could not be ignored any longer.

It had started: when an organism died, it now began to luminesce; it glowed, and brightly.

Corey looked out at the near-daylight brightness given off by the dead, by the soil the dead went into, and he realized might never see natural darkness ever again.

Fearless Flying Fool

By Scott L Vannatter

The Baron adjusted his flying outfit, checking for smoothness and, of course, general appearance for his crowd of onlookers.

He waved, stepping into the warmed-up plane, and shouted a hardy “See you back on the ground!” in his most fearless voice.

He had practiced and practiced, skydiving from over one hundred fifty feet into a five hundred gallon container of water, so that this new challenge from three hundred feet might not seem so difficult.

The plane went up to five hundred feet in order to circle once, get it’s bearings visually, and allow the Baron a chance to catch his breath before his death-defying feat.

All was well until the plane, at four hundred and fifty feet, stalled, due to lack of fuel (he forgot to check), and crashed into the tower itself, drowning both men while putting out the plane’s fire from the impact.

Saffron raised her arms over her head, signaling lightning and thunder to erupt throughout the heavens with sound and lighting both dazzling to the eyes and ears of the hundreds of millions watching the spectacle with awe and a trace of fear.

The tips of her fingers sparked, igniting spheres of energy cascading by the hundreds, filling the lower reaches of the sky with miniature suns, nearly blazing in a myriad of colors.

The goddess waved her arms full and wide, causing dozens of glorious rainbows to light up the horizon.

In the breathtaking finale, she brought tornadoes of whirling electricity to funnel the spheres to the tops of the rainbows while the lighting syncopated with the heartbeats of those present.

She prided herself on her work and held her head up high with dignity, since who else but Mars’ wife could bring in the first millennia of the old gods’ return to power and announce her place among them?

Five Sentence Fiction – “Fenced” PG13

Lillie McFerrin, hosts Five Sentence Fiction, 5 sentence stories based on a one-word prompt (This week:  Fenced).  After reading mine below, click > HERE < for the rest.  Enjoy!!!

Don’t Fence Me…

By Scott L Vannatter

George waited patiently in the ORIFICE (Office of Regulations in Interstate Fencing of Internal Customer Expenditures) for what seemed like days, but, more than likely, was simply hours and hours while his complaint was filled, filed, and fixated upon.

The MAW (Matron of Anguished Workers) held out his papers, filled in except for his signature and date in no less than 18 spots, along with a brand new generic pen labeled “From the MAW of the ORIFICE” and looked at him expectantly.

George took the proffered papers and prolifically permeated, then pontificated about a paragraph or two before purposefully punctuating his (not so) pleasant speech with proper and prime points.

The MAW brought in an under-seer who unabashedly undulated until ultimately and unequivocally understated the obvious.

George frantically flipped and flopped, but fundamentally acquiesced that he had been fenced to Finland finally in a feeble financing fiasco concerning francs.
