“Offering”

Finality

Scott L Vannatter – January 14, 2015

Jeckland raised her hands toward the heavens and cited the lines from the ritual she had studied for several months.

“I offer myself to the realms as a sacrifice to that which on my life I have pledged.”

The air grew still then, almost like a breath, the clouds opened up and shimmering, whirling bands of starry lights cascaded from the center, opening up and engulfing the figure of the woman, now so tiny in respect to the magnificence of the scene.

Her body began to blur, taking on the aspect of a ghost and, within minutes, she vanished entirely, the clouds drew up, and all became still once more.

After a slight hesitation, the earth at the center of where Jeckland had stood only moments before exploded into light; the illumination spread to all parts of the globe, wiping pollution, trash, and all manner of planetary desecration clean, giving the Earth a new and glorious start.

Bountiful Blessings

By Scott L Vannatter – 155 Words

@SVBookman

Pepe walked proudly toward the center of town, toward the throng of people gathered for the ceremony, gathered for him.  He was pleased with himself for having been the bravest, the one deserving of praise and valor, and of the privilege of being the chosen one.  He walked with his head high held high, his spirits higher.

When he reached the square, the priest anointed his forehead with olive oil to signify the coming bounty.  He prayed over Pepe, drawing the crowd in with his thanks and pleas to Beophile.  The villagers began to chant, starting softly, then growing to a frenzy of screaming.

While they were chanting, they lifted Pepe up by their hands and tossed him high into the air.  With each chanting repeat they tossed him higher.  The clouds grew darker and he saw the hand of Beophile coming for him.  His courage failed him. He began to cry, understanding at last.
