What Are the Odds?

I enjoy dealing with odds. I like the long shots as well as the seemingly simple “should wins”. So, tonight, as a breather for you all from my average lengthy blog, here are some interesting odds I looked up. I wrote out the questions and then used Google.

The chance of catching the AIDS virus from a single act of heterosexual intercourse with an infected partner is 1 in 500 if no condom is used

The odds of getting the virus are reduced to 1 in 5 billion (1:5,000,000,000) if a condom is used with a low-risk partner who has been tested and found free of the virus

A royal flush in spades is considered the highest possible hand. The chances of achieving it are only 1 in the 2,598,960 possible hands. (not sure why spades, overall odds are 4:2,598,960 – one in each suit).

Odds of a Royal flush with 7 cards being involved (like in texas hold em) :
4,324 in 13,3784,560 which is 1 hand in every 30,940 hands

Odds of being struck by lightning in a given year (estimated total deaths + injuries) 1/775,000
Odds of being struck in your lifetime (Est. 80 years) 1/10,000

_
Powerball Jackpot odds 1 in 175,223,510 (Man, I am disappointed!)

_
if only one partner smoked, it caused more marital problems than differing religions, different backgrounds, even different plans for having children.
Couples are an astonishing 76-95% more likely to get divorced if only one of them smokes.

_
My approximate life expectancy was calculated at 88 years. (lost the website)

The ratio of 51% boys to 49% girls seen here is representative of overall US birth rates. This seems to have been true year after year in US.

Now, that wasn’t so bad, was it?

Do you have a favorite odd?  What is is?

Namaste,

Scott

Odds of striking it rich on Antiques Roadshow: 60,000 to 1 …so there you have it, buddy as you start leafing through the items in your home. You just might find that diamond in the rough and strike it rich 😀

I haven’t signed up on the forum. You can comment and sign up, but it does worry me that your “Follow” tag at the bottom right doesn’t work. I think you may lose followers if it isn’t fixed or removed.

Other than that it looks beautiful!
Don’t cry. I worked in computers for over 23 years. There is always a little something left at the end. If all else is working, don’t worry. That’s small stuff.

the smoking thing was interesting. i smoked from 11-25 then quit cold turkey. when i met Hubby he smoked. i told him i needed him to quit or it would be too hard on me to not go back.
he quit…but it’s just in this 9th year of marriage, that he has finally decided it’s as much for himself as for me. he still craves terribly after 9 years. where he works everyone smokes. he tried it again twice and the second try made him really ill…that’s when he knew he didn’t want to go back for himself.
i made it alright for him to try again if he couldn’t fight off the cravings anymore, i knew if i didn’t he would be more likely to go back to it. sorry this is so long. 🙂

Long is good; I am glad neither of you smoke. Would like having you both around longer.

yes that’s why i quit…two reasons, fear of cancer, and never wanted to be a smoking mother…funny how i never became a mother
